The Story of Brock

Brock grew up around the people who built it — literally. In 1871 John Henry Brock, a carpenter and cabinetmaker, bought land eleven miles southwest of Weatherford and put up many of the community's earliest buildings. The town carries his name to this day.

A second pioneer family sealed the deal in 1880, when the Madduxes — who had arrived from Arkansas a few years earlier — donated land for churches, a cemetery and a school, giving the scattered settlement a center of gravity. The Brock post office opened in 1888.

By 1892 the little town had a blacksmith shop, cotton gin, gristmill, grocery, post office and school, and soon added a flour mill and the Olive Branch Collegiate Institute. It never grew large, hovering around 100 residents at the turn of the century.

Brock remains an unincorporated community with no city government — but the tight-knit town punches far above its weight through Brock ISD, one of only two A-rated districts in the county and the proud home of the Eagles.
