Sanctuary is one of the smallest incorporated towns in Parker County — barely a third of a square mile of rural residential and equestrian acreage off State Highway 199, about sixteen miles northeast of Weatherford.
The community incorporated in the early 1980s (one source points to an earlier 1968 date, suggesting a reorganization), choosing to govern itself with a mayor, a city council and a volunteer fire department rather than be absorbed by its larger neighbors.
Growth has been gentle and deliberate: the population rose from 234 in 1990 to 256 in 2000 and reached 337 by the 2020 census, as families were drawn to its quiet, low-density, acreage character.
Students in Sanctuary attend Azle ISD, and the town remains exactly what its name promises — a small, peaceful refuge on the edge of the growing Metroplex.
