The Story of Cool

Cool may have the best name in Parker County, and it is exactly as small as it sounds. This tiny incorporated town sits on U.S. Highway 180 about eleven miles west of Weatherford.

Cool is a relative newcomer among the county's towns — it incorporated sometime after 1960 and first appeared on county maps in the mid-1960s. The 1970 census found just 21 people living there.

A brief surge followed: by 1978 the estimated population had jumped to around 253, settling near 200 through the 1980s and 1990s before drifting down again. It has always been a quiet bedroom-and-ranch community rather than a commercial hub.

Students here attend Springtown ISD, and for most travelers Cool is a memorable green highway sign on the way west — proof that some of Texas's best stories come in the smallest packages.
