The Story of Aledo

Aledo is the oldest city in Parker County, and it owes its existence to a railroad refueling stop. In 1879 the Texas and Pacific Railroad pushed a line from Fort Worth to Weatherford, and the first stop inside the county — a coal-and-water station for westbound trains — became known as Parker's Station.

There was just one problem: the mail. Because Weatherford was the county seat, letters addressed to "Parker's Station" kept landing in the wrong town. In 1882 the Postal Department forced a name change, and the settlement was renamed Aledo after the Illinois hometown of a Texas and Pacific railroad official.

What began as a farming settlement along the Clear Fork of the Trinity slowly grew into a town, finally incorporating in 1963. For most of its life Aledo stayed small and rural — but its name would become famous for something else entirely.

Today Aledo is best known as home of the Aledo ISD Bearcats, owners of the most state football championships in Texas history, and as one of the fastest-growing communities in the county, anchored by the massive Walsh master-planned development on its eastern edge.
