Peaster began in the 1870s when H.H. Peaster, a Georgia native, bought 160 acres northwest of Weatherford and built a house. The community that grew up nearby was first called Freemont, then renamed Peasterville in 1885 in his honor; postal service arrived around the same time.
By the mid-1890s the town supported more than 100 residents with three churches, a steam gin, a gristmill, a school and a half-dozen businesses. Its population peaked at roughly 300 in the mid-1920s.
The Great Depression hit hard, and Peaster never fully regained its earlier size, settling into life as a small unincorporated farming community.
Its identity today runs through its schools: Peaster ISD and the Peaster Greyhounds give this little community northwest of Weatherford a name that carries far beyond its modest population.
