Parker County firefighter volunteers fighting wildfires in Israel — and answered rocket calls on his own honeymoon

Howard Haber, a longtime firefighter who lives in unincorporated Parker County just outside Weatherford, has twice traveled to Israel to fight wildfires as a volunteer with the Emergency Volunteers Project, in 2024 and 2025. A captain with the Benbrook Fire Department with about 40 years in the fire service, Haber also instructs at the Weatherford College Fire Academy and earned an associate's degree in fire administration from Weatherford College. His connection to Israel began on his honeymoon there with his wife, Jamie Wise-Haber; the Weatherford Democrat reports a regional conflict broke out about three days into the trip, and the couple found themselves visiting bomb shelters while Haber responded to rocket fire. Haber, who grew up in Fort Worth and previously lived in Aledo, has called Parker County home for 12 years and says he would return to volunteer again if asked.
